札幌学校が開校。/ 明治9（1876）年8月14日
明治9年、札幌学校の開校式が開拓使長官・黒田清隆らを迎えて開式されました。札幌学校は4年前に東京に開校した開拓使仮学校を札幌に移転し、改称したもの。
教頭にはアメリカからマサチューセッツ農科大学長だったウィリアム・クラークが招かれました。クラークは農学・植物学・英語を教えることになっています。
同校は、農学教育が中心となるため、9月には「札幌能学校」と改称されました。
