大文字五山送り火/8月16日
8月16日夜、京都では、大文字五山の送り火が灯されます。
送り火は、迎えた精霊を再び冥府に送る盂蘭盆会の行事です。
起源については諸説ありますが、室町時代以降に起こったと見られており、江戸時代には文献にも記述が見られるようになります。
16日は午後8時～、東山如意ケ嶽の「大文字」、松ヶ崎の「妙法」、西賀茂船山の「船形」、大北山の「左大文字」、嵯峨鳥居本の「鳥居形」と次々に点火。
約30分間、古都の夜を焦がします。
五山送り火が燃え尽きると、京都の夏は終わり、秋の装いを見せ始めます。
