蛤御門の変、起こる/元治元（1864）年7月19日
元治元（1864）年7月19日,御所の禁門である蛤御門で、長州藩と会津、薩摩、桑名、新選組との間で戦闘が勃発しました。
前年、8月18日の政変で京都を追われた長州藩が、雌伏約1年、大軍を率いて京都に突入しました。
長州は一時、御所に迫る勢いで攻め込みましたが、会津、桑名、薩摩ら諸藩連合の前に敗北。
京の町は火の海となり、人々は逃げ惑い、市中の家屋はことごとく焼けました。
指導者・久坂玄瑞は鷹司邸で自刃して果て、真木和泉は天王山に布陣しましたが、翌日、新選組に追い詰められ果てました。
